Ponds & Streams is a look at the wildlife found in British ponds and streams. It has been made in association with the environmental charity The Field Studies Council and includes a virtual version of their best-selling fold-out identification sheet .

Ponds & Streams is suitable for ages 7 - 11 and supports Key Stage 2 of the National Curriculum. It includes fact-filled reference sections with over 60 video clips, activities such as virtual pond dipping, making a scrapbook and using a key to identify pond animals, plus a game section where the pond animals need help making their pond look nice. Once the tasks are done, mini-games become available to play.

An important feature of the program is the Virtual Pond. This consists of 67 screens showing life under the water complete with changes in sound and light, floating weed, litter, and animated animals. Click on an animal to find out what it eats, plus special features such as any adaptations to pond life. Use of the virtual pond on an interactive whiteboard is a ideal introduction to pond life, developing a familiarity with the variety of animals to be found, as well as the challenges presented by their environment.

Fantastic lesson idea! The virtual pond also provides an excellent context for studies of food chains: click to read how teacher Jonathan Lear became a Pond Life Police Detective and used the virtual pond to study food chains with his Year 6 class. Comments from teachers:

"I have just taken delivery (very promptly) of a copy of Ponds and Streams and I felt that I must write to say that the program has exceeded even the high expectations I had of it after a quick preview at the recent ASE Area Conference in Chelmsford.

It is an EXCELLENT resource. Super information content presented in a bright and attractive way. I particularly like the activities and the interactive FSC key is really super. The filmstrips are another wonderful feature, something impossible to do without the use of IT.

We received it just in time to do a little preparation prior to a visit to a nature reserve tomorrow, and it proved to be a highly engaging and motivational tool which the children thoroughly enjoyed using. Obviously we have hardly scratched the surface of its content or potential as yet!"

"... the cd is easy to navigate and I love the illustrations! I particularly like the freshwater name trail and What's that animal... It does look very good"
